ABOUT GICLEE REPRODUCTIONS
A giclee is a high resolution, individually produced, high quality reproduction. Giclee's are produced on a special large format printer using a radical new process . The original artwork is recreated by spraying millions of microscopic dots per square inch onto high quality watercolor paper. The inks are absorbed slightly and blend creating a seamless, continuous tone image and a fine art edition of the original.
Giclees are produced from extremely high resolution digital scans of the original artwork. The image is then color matched with the original using sophisticated calibration techniques in conjunction with the artist's input, guaranteeing that the image has all the subtle tonalities and hues of the original painting.
In addition, Giclees are produced directly from a digital file, saving generations of detail-robbing negatives and printing plates, as with traditional printing.
The combination of archival inks and paper render deep, saturated colors and have a beautiful painterly quality that retains minute detail, subtle tints and blends yielding artwork with stunning vibrancy and realism. The preciseness of the printing along with the depth of color range captures the subtleties and nuances of an original image be it watercolor, oil or acrylic.
Giclees were originally developed as a proofing system for lithograph printing presses, but it became apparent that the presses were having a hard time matching the quality and color of the giclee proofs. They evolved into the new darlings of the art world. They are coveted by collectors, and desired by galleries and provide better color accuracy than any other means of reproduction.
As the giclee process is still relatively new, the life span of a giclee print is not known with certainty; however many authorities estimate it to be between 100 to 200 years.
